What is ironic? In the strictest sense, irony is a literary device in which there is a marked contrast between expectation and reality. For instance, dramatic irony occurs when a character speaks or acts without knowing his or her full circumstances, to the amusement or consternation of the audience.

What do you mean by Dramatic Irony?

Dramatic Irony is the term used to describe a situation in the play where the audience understands what is really happening, but the characters do not. For example, in Romeo and Juliet, when Juliet is talking to the Nurse about Romeo, she describes him as: 'the only hate I bear him is that he is a man'. Unbeknownst to Juliet, Romeo has just killed her cousin Tybalt.

Types of Irony 

Irony is a literary or verbal technique in which the real meaning is concealed or contradicted by the literal meanings of the words. Irony can be classified into three types: (1) Verbal, (2) Situational, and (3) Dramatic. 

The third type of irony is dramatic irony, or when the audience knows something that a character doesn't know. In "Oedipus Rex," for example, Oedipus believes he's about to find out who murdered King Laius, but what he doesn't know is that he himself is the murderer. 

Example of Irony
