What are Poetic Devices?

Poetic Devices Based on the Hints of Words

Alliteration- Alliteration can be defined as the noticeable redundancy of the same first consonant sound in close syllables within a group of words.  

Examples-  Poem from Paradise Lost by John Milton

“Behemoth biggest born of earth upheaved

His vastness: Fleeced the flocks and bleating rose,

As plants: Ambiguous between sea and land

The river-horse, and scaly crocodile.”

Assonance- It is the repeated vowel sound in the word that is near each other in the sentence. You will identify sounds that are highlighted in a line.  

Example- “O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?” - Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare

Consonance- Consonance is similar to assonance but the difference is here the repetition of a consonant in the word and consonant is the near and close together in the sentence. The syllable is called the consonant and comes at the end.  

Example- If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers

Where’s the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked?

Cacophony-It is an unmusical or unpleasant sound that helps to express any disorder or disagreement. It created unpleasantness in the reader’s mind.  

Example- “The Jabberwocky” by Lewis Carroll

‘Twas brillig, and the slithy toves

Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:

All mimsy were the borogoves,

And the mome raths outgrabe

Euphony- This poetic device is derived from the Greek Word euphonos which means pleasant voice. Euphony can be defined as the use of words or phrases that are used to bring pleasant sound effects. It gives a pleasant effect to the readers due to the redundancy of vowels and consonants. The writer can use this with other poetic devices.

Example- “Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness,

Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;

Conspiring with him how to load and bless

With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run.  

Rhyme- It is a repetition of words having the same sounds at the end of line in a poem. It gives a pleasing sound to the poem. Children can easily recite and learn the poem using rhyme with enjoyment and fun.  

Example- Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,  

Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.
